There's such a big transition from being an Aussie actor playing Aussie roles, to being an Aussie actor playing an American character in an American show.

According to TV Line, the show averaged only 326,000 weekly viewers and a 0.05 demo rating, which put the series at the lower end of the CW's Nielsen ratings for the summer.

But the discovery is marred by Lydon Industries, which wants to roll in with their mining trucks and destroy her tiny hamlet and all the resident's properties. Thankfully, Sarah comes up with the crazy plan for her town to claim independence, courtesy of a mapping loophole. She comes to find out the land where her town Greylock sits was not formally claimed by either the United States or Canada, so it was able to be its own entity. It doesn't give the independence story enough space to breathe and put down roots in reality. It certainly isn't given enough space to feel like a premise that could sustain a show for multiple seasons.

And it's mired in too much CW-style family drama and teen/YA sexual innuendo to make any headway. He tries to spin it as a positive for the town, but most of the people are worried that they'll be displaced or the town will become an ecological wasteland. After punching her brother when she mentions their mother, she goes back to see Ellen; after 11 months sober, Ellen has decided to get drunk with the news of Danny's return.

Sarah understood how abusive Ellen could be towards Danny when she was drunk, but she still can't understand why he cut the both of them off when he left. In that movie, a small district in London not far from the Houses of Parliament, chafing under the restrictions of post-war rationing, discovers a document that shows their neighbourhood is not part of England but the House of Burgundy.

The residents declare independence from England and begin negotiations about their sovereignty. The British government retaliates by cutting off power, food, and resources, cordon off the district with barb wire while black marketeers flood in to sell foods and goods. Similar things happen in The Republic of Sarah, though in a slightly less satirical manner, though the layer of surreal absurdity is still present.

Its lowkey, lighthearted seriousness makes it the strangest show on TV right now. The show underscores the importance of community and the need to care for the people who make their home in any particular community. Values like respect for nature and the power of pulling together for a cause are championed.

A city vs. country strain in the drama can view "city folk" a bit stereotypically. Headed by former Greylock resident Danny Cooper, the company plans to buy out private properties, bring in new workers and pay for town improvements—such as new roads and a new power grid. But, like the four-flushing, mustachioed villains of dinner-theater melodrama, the corporate stormtroopers live down to expectations. Naturally the first thing they do is crush a quaint pagoda in the town square because, as everybody knows, there's a lot of profit in pagoda-crushing. And Cooper, still stirred from by her Revolutionary War lesson plans, decides they must be stopped before they declare war on park benches, flower boxes, and playful kittens.

The show has the patented CW wackiness within the premise, but in practice, the show has a lot of heart. It showcases the power of perseverance in this political moment, no superpowers required. It highlights how, if one person is willing, normal people can save themselves and those they love. In the series, Cooper's estranged brother acts as the lawyer and subsequent evil face of corporate America. Essentially, it's a classic David and Goliath story that — not unlike Netflix's popular fantasy drama "Ragnarok"— modernizes an age-old narrative by adding in an environmental element.

The ratings– This is almost always the reason why a show fails to continue, and more than likely it is the case here. In terms of live numbersThe Republic of Sarahwas one of The CW's lowest-rated original shows of the past year and barely registered a 0.1 rating in the demographic alongside more than 320,000 live viewers. These just aren't the sort of numbers that justify keeping a show around.

It also probably hurt that the premise here didn't translate into international success the same way that many of the network's other franchise-based shows do. So many of them are going to inherently have a far better chance of staying on the air for some long period of time.
